those naughty hens

Were pretending they has stopped laying now we are well past the Summer Solstice. No "I'm gonna lay a cackleberry noises" and the frantic rushing around that goes with telling the whole of Leichhardt that an egg is happening.
But I kept looking at  a couple of them thinking  they must be laying them somewhere. Found them amid the thorns of a rose bush at their back gate. And yes they are all still fit to eat, they passed the sink test!

Nice eggs! Bet they were delicious!

A nice clutch - I wonder whether that's the origin of the traditional dozen eggs. Perhaps one chook was planning a late sitting before autumn and about to go clucky.
My girls switch their egg production on and off with the seasons and the sun. Now they are getting ready for their annual holiday of R and R to restore their bodies before it all starts again in spring.
I too like the break from having to use up the bountiful supply in cakes, ice-cream and lemon butter.
It's always good to see a new entry on your blog Elizabeth, so I thought I'd better show my appreciation with a response.
Love, Deborah in Tas.
