Purple snow

Whilst it might be snowing in the Northern Hemisphere, here we have the purple blossoms of the Jacaranda trees falling like snow. Nice to look at, but they will not stay outdoors!

Yes he is a Kingfisher-a Sacred one

Those wonderful people at the Australian museum are very prompt.
This was their reply to my email:

From your photos it looks like a Sacred Kingfisher (Todiramphus
sanctus).
They are found in Sydney but are not commonly seen and their visits are
very special!
There is a factsheet and photo on our website at this link:
http://www.amonline.net.au/factSheets/sacred_kingfisher.htm
So I am flattered that he chose my place for a stopover. Though I suspect he is using my place as an observation post to check the neighbours fish pond!

12.noon another update. Got a closer shot of him at 11.30 this morning. He had a lizard swinging from his beak just before this photo was taken. As my friend Tig, will tell you, I have an abundance of lizards in the garden. So maybe he is not here for the neighbour's fish!

A visitor to the garden

smaller than a kookaburra normally is around here, could not find him on the Birds in Backyards site, so I've emailed them. Not a good photo , I know, but did not want to chase him off. a beautiful turquoise colour plumage, with a 'daintier' beak than kookas. Quiet, too, watching the mynahs carrying on like the fools they are.

Stormy Weather

Last night, the State Emergency Service, and Jason, our local arborist, came to secure a tree that was threatening to topple over onto the neighbours' shed. The BRH picture shows it coming loose from the roots, the others show how they anchored it to a couple of trees. They did all this in the dark! When the winds calm down, Jason will come back & remove the tree.

September 1

Today is the first day of spring. Hooray!!
Yesterday we took a classs down to the Pyrmont harbour . "This will be an easy day for you, Lizzie" my colleague told me. 40 minutes later I was rowing an eighteenth century life boat. After a while my arms dropped off!
